I said. I bloody said.

New Jersey Senate votes down gay marriage bill.

Pushing marriage failed in freakin' California. The solution? Try exactly the same strategy in Maine. It failed in Maine. The solution? Try exactly the same strategy in New Jersey.

So, any bets? Will the activists adjust and adopt a mature, politically savvy strategy of baby steps toward their goal, or will the impassioned and clueless continue to lead the movement, and just keep screaming "but we're right, dammit!" as they lose more and more rights? Personally, I expect to hear that they're campaigning for marriage in New York next.

Once again, being right just isn't good enough.

  1. If you're trying to run a civil rights fight, frigging learn from the successful one. The defeat of Jim Crow and Separate but Equal took a generation - and probably happened because the old guard died out.

And, yes, I'm fully aware that sucks for the persecuted.

  2. I'd even go as far as to suggest that the biggest unilateral government intrusion into race relations--the emancipation of the slaves during the Civil War--may have set the cause _back_ more than it helped. Before the war, there were more abolitionist groups in the South than in the North, and southerners lived and worked with black people while northerners more often saw them as outsiders unfairly competing for jobs. Slavery only benefitted the biggest plantations (the Wal Marts of their time), and most southerners opposed it. Jefferson Davis himself predicted that (after the South's victory) he expected slavery to die out completely within his lifetime.

I think it's reasonable to speculate that having a social change forced on you by the oppressive government that just murdered a quarter million of your people to prevent you from declaring independence might prejudice you against that change.

    But I'm ranting.

In any case, it sure does suck for the persecuted. But does it suck more to be persecuted while you're building the foundation for a better tomorrow, or to be persecuted while you stamp your foot, insist that you're RIGHT, DAMMIT, and watch all the work the last generation did on your behalf fall apart?

Is this a trick question or something?
